Ode to the Community Consumer

local 2974159 1280The blog post this week is directed toward the consumers,  yes, the customers. We have a tendency to be very hard on the merchants in our community. We place more stringent rules and guidelines for patronage on our local merchants than on the larger stores and mall merchants we often frequent.

editor's corner: the village

deneen jacoWe've all heard the phrase, "It Takes a Village to Raise a Child!" Who is the village? The village is me, the village is you, each of us as integral pieces that make up the whole, regardless, of race, personal accomplishments or socio-economic status.

"Train up a child in the way that he should go: and when he is old, he shall not depart from it." ~ Proverbs 22:6

The Village Spotlight

While we often hear of late breaking stories on the local news and media channels, we want to post late breaking news and accomplishments of the people who make up the communities (our villages) who are not always afforded the opportunity to be recognized.

On August 15 we will launch the new forum hosted by Jacob's Rite of Passage entitled, "The Village Spotlight." In keeping with the theme of "It STILL takes a village to raise a child. It's time to reclaim the village," we have decided to spotlight some of the people in our community, with a focus on our young people.

If you want to recommend a Village Spotlight, please go to our submissions page and submit your story. After editorial review we will contact you with the date it will be published to our blog.

Instructions. Please submit the following:

      • A written piece, 500 words or less, to include
        • the name, age and relevant information about the nominee
        • why you are nominating them as the village spotlight.
      • A photo.

The distribution of your written piece, if approved, will be included on the website, in our monthly newsletter, and on our facebook page. Your email address is required so we can notify you.

Let's make a difference! Be a part of reclaiming our village. Nominate a village spotlight!

hope hollinsworth240

In keeping with our theme of the village, it is my pleasure and unique honor to spotlight this amazing visionary, Hope Hollinsworth Coaxum. We met intially when she inquired about some of our design services for her second novel and have been sister-friends and business associates ever since.  I am so blessed by her testimonies of overcoming and willingness to reach out and reach back and help others overcome.

Hope is really a remarkable young woman who hosts a broad range of talents and interests. She wears all of her multiple hats quite well, woman, wife, mother, activist, author, playwright, director, employer, publisher, just to name a few. She is also active in her local church and community, and spearheads many outreach initiatives in the Yonkers area.

We want to thank her for allowing us to spotlight her. I pray that her sharing will spill over into the lives of others, that they too may be inspired.

"Where there's a need for hope, is where you'll find Hope."

  • Get a GOOD EDUCATION . Get a GOOD JOB?

pexels photo 901964We raise our children, then instruct them to go to school, study hard, get good grades, attend college and “GET A GOOD JOB.” Now, I absolutely agree with the importance of getting a good education, yet realistically, college is not for everyone.

  • Learning IS the Institution

    pexels photo 356086

A great deal of effort and expense is invested in education; in learning, which is indeed a necessary tool in order to contend and compete in the workforce or any specialized area of study or interest.

I believe it is vital to bring LEARNING outside of the established norms. We must make learning the INSTITUTION as opposed to relying solely on learning institutions.

  • Are Black-owned Businesses on the Brink of Bankruptcy?

pexels photo 929245Keeping in step with the stated theme of "It Takes a Village to Raise a Child," and the appropriated action to "Reclaim the Village," I believe we must look at the inner workings of the village and take proper action, yes, the necessary steps to arrive at our desired outcome.

The village community is about the people, but we the people must commit to becoming productive participants within our village.
